Preservation of life is relevent to a consideration of the morality of war, but it could be used by either side.

War could be considered as a method of self defence and a way of protecting innocent lives, however war does contain the loss of lives of non natural causes and some of the lives that are lost will be innocent ones.

War also infringes on other primary precepts such as life in society, if a society is divided as it is in war then it's going against the secondary precept, as also societies can be damaged by war.
