• Convention also important for choosing vice president candidate, Obama using 2008 as a platform to show off Biden 
• However this can come secondary to the president, nobody really cared about Mike Pence 
• Also a good base with which to announce policy targets, Obama using 2008 using it to promote obamacare 
• However in reality it does little to promote it, Republicans not able to follow through with 2016 commitment to overturning obegerfell v hodges
