A mutation is a change in a gene sequence


  • Chance (commonest cause)
  • Carcinogenic chemicals 
  • UV Radiation
  • Ionising radiation

Most mutations are bad for us. They can cause inherited disorders like;

  • Haemophilia
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Sickle Cell anaemia
  • Colour blindness

This is because the mutated genes are unable to  make the correct protein


Different versions of the same protein are called alleles.
