- assimilation- 'becoming as one' Britain should be a melting pot. Migrants should leave their old lives behind and adopt british cultures. immigrants distinct ethnic backgrounds would fade away as they adopt more britishness
- integration- respect differences of cultures and allow cultures to co exist. integration implies that there should be a sense of belonging without cultural traditions being sacrificed.
- multiculturalism- differences should be preserved and celebrated. no one culture is dominant and everyone is different.
- race- the term loosely used to mean any group of people with common characteristics. Today it is acknowledged that race has no scientific validity
- ethnicity- taken to involve any group of people conscious of their own origins, identity and traditions. there are cultural rather than biological differences
