overview:
upper class lady.
mother to eric and sheila.
refused eva help.
represents:
capitalism and its supporters
ignorance ( especially to the lower classes)
analysis:
in the sense of it being a morality play:
she represents two of the seven deadly sins: wrath and pride.
naive- doesn't think there is a problem in her family at all.
reinforced by stage directions "pink and intimate lighting" which is ruined by the Inspector- he is here to pop their bubble.
the fact the staging doesn't change also supports the idea the whole family are stuck in their own little bubble.
pride:
she is proud of her social class, and her family name:
"First she called herself Mrs Birling!" "her husband's social superior"
