Segregation- Keeping black and white Americans separate 

Discrimination- Treating someone differently (in this case) because of their skin colour 

NAACP- National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People- civil rights group who fought for the rights of Black Americans

US Supreme Court- The higest court in the USA who were able to make decisions to change the law.

Discrimination

  •  Southern states 
  •  Experienced problems in housing, jobs/education
  •  Jobs with lower status
  •  Unskilled proffessions 
  •  Lower wages 
  •  Couldnt afford good homes in good areas

Segregation

  •  majority lived in Southern States
  • Marriage (interracial) banned in southern states 
  •  public places segregated 
  •  Children legally segregated if education was equal
  •  "Seperate but equal"

Jim Crow laws 

  •  Series of anti-african American legislation legalising segregation between whites and blacks in the USA.
  •  Different laws between 1876-1965

Voting rights 

  •  Black Americans were allowed to vote 
  •  Literacy tests to stop Black Americans voting
  • Schooling was poor/expensive
  •  Questiosn such as "how many bubbles are there in a bar of soap?" were asked to stop them from being able to vote 
  •  Those who passed faced violence and intimidation
