Ptolemy thought that the Earth was in the centre of the known solar system which was the first five planets. The stars were fixed and the plants had circular orbits. He used mathmatical calculations and instruments and the naked eye. He was disproved by Galileo who observed Jupiter's four moons which showed that not everything orbitted around the Earth.
