Definitions

Define: Chromatid      A chromatid is one of the two identical copies of a chromosome. It is joinde at the centomere prior to cell devision.

Define: Centromere    specialised regions where two chromatids join and to which the microtubels of the spindle attach during cell devision.

Define: Haploid   Haploid means to have one complete ste of chromosomes.

Define: Diploid   Diploid means to have two complete sets of chromosomes.

Define: homologous pair The chromosomes  in a homogolous pair are identical in sixe and shape and they carry the same gene loci, with genes from the same characteristics. one chromosomes for each pair comes from each parent. some pairs of sex chromosomes, such as the X and Y in male mammals are different sizes and are not homogolgous pairs.

Define: Mitosis mitosis is a type of cell devision in which the two daughter cells have the same number of chromosones and are genetically identical with each other and the parent cell.

Define: Cytokinesis Cytokinesis is the cytoplasmic division of a cell at the end of mitosis or meisos bringing about the seperation into two daughter cells.

Define: Oncogene An oncogene is a gene which in certian circumstances can transform a cell into a tumor cell.

(Describe the phases of the cell cycle).

Interphase:  Interphase is the period of sythesis and growth

What happens during interphase:

  • the longes phase of the cell cycle.
  • The newly formed cell grows…
