Growing bacteria in a lab
- Bacteria (and some other microorganisms) are cultured in a culture medium
- Culture medium - contains the carbohydrates, minerals, proteins and vitamins needed for growth
- The culture medium can be solid agar jelly or a nutrient broth solution
- Bacteria grown on agar plates will form visible colonies on the surface or spread out to give an even covering of bacteria
- Inoculating loops can be used to transfer microorganisms to the culture medium
- Sterile dropping pipettes and spreader can be used to get an even covering of bacteria
- In schools, microorganisms cannot be kept above 25 degrees as harmful pathogens may…
