Magnification is how much bigger the image is than the specimen. It's calculated using the formula:

Magnification = length of image / length of specimen

or                   Image
              Actual     Magnification

A micrometre is 0.001mm                     /1000
A nanometre is 0.000 001mm.              /1000

Resolution is how well microscope distinguishes between two points that are close together.

Light microscopes use light and have a lower resolution than electron microscopes.
