Methods of sequencing DNA

1) The polymerase chain reaction

This is an example of artificial DNA replication whereby tiny samples are used to generate huge quantities of copies- Just like a photocopier!!!

3 special steps

  • DENATURATION- A piece of DNA is mixed with the enzyme DNA polymerase and heated to 95 degrees. This seperates the two strands of DNA
  • ANEALING- The temperature is reduced to 55 degrees and short pieces of single stranded DNA (primers) are added. The primers
