Non-participant observation:

Positivists prefer this approach, specifically structured non-participant observation as it provides a systematic way of analysing classroom interaction. The researcher is not present within this method, and there is a checklist of things to observe which can be turned into quantitative data.

Interpretivists prefer unstructured non-participant observation which generates rich and detailed qualitative data that captures the meaning behind classroom interactions.
