Participant observation:

Used by interpretivists as they argue that understanding society can only be gained by putting themselves in the position of the participant. Yields qualitative data and includes the concept of Verstehen (empathy) which is important for participant observation. Example: Paul Willis Learning to Labour study - underwent participant observation through attending class as one of the students rather than a teacher, gained the trust and understood and received more information and data through this method.
