Physical properties of metals:

  • Solid state in room temperature
    • except for mecury (liquid)
  • High melting and boiling point
    • except potassium (64 degrees)
    • and sodium (98 degrees)
    • [Pang Sai Sium]
  • Denser than non-metals
  • Shiny appearance/lustrous when freshly cut

SUMMARY FOR PROPERTIES OF METALS VS NON-METALS [beauty vs nerd]

Metals:

1) Shiny

2) High melting and boiling points (exp. potassium, sodium)

3) High density

4) Malleable

5) Ductile

6) Good heat conductor

7) Good electrical conductor

8) Metal oxides are bases --> When dissolved in water becomes alkaline

9) Strong

Non-metals:

1) Dull

2) Low melting points and boiling points (Broimid is a liquid at room temperature, and eleven others are gases)

3) Low density

4) Brittle

5) Not ductile

6) Poor heat conductors

7) Poor electrical conductors (exp graphite, a form of carbon)

8) Non-metal oxides form
