Memory- The Working Memory Model

?

Working Memory Model

Baddeley and Hitch (1974) proposed this model after arguing that the STM was more than one single store. They instead describe a working memory model comprised of numerous stores.

1. Central executive- An attentional process to monitor incoming data from the senses and the LTM. It determines how the slave systems are allocated to tasks. It has a very limited capacity- it cannot attend to too many things at once and is unable to store data. The slave systems also have limited capacity.

2. Phonological loop- This slave system deals with auditory (sound) information and perserves its order. Subdivided into the phonological store (stores the words you hear) and the articulatory process ( a verbal loop enanbling you to repeat words).

3. Visuo-spatial sketchpad- This slave system responsible for visual and spatial information. Subdivied into the visual cache, storing information about visual items like colour and form, and an inner scribe, which deals with spacial relationships between objects.

4. Episodic buffer- An extra storage system to hold information relating to both visual and acoustic information. It intergrates information from the other stores and sends information to LTM…
