MEDIEVAL CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

anglo-saxon crimes = 

  • crimes against person = murder
  • crime against property = petty theft 
  • crimes against authority = treason 

Punishments = 

  • capital and corporal punishments = hanged or mutiliation 
  • wergild = compensation paid to victims family 
  • stocks and pillorys 
  • sanctuary = crinimal protected from law for 40 days 
  • benefit of clergy = clergy able to avoid punishment if able to recite psalm 15 
  • retribution = blood fued - family can kill someone who killed their kin
  • replaced with deterrance = wergild replaced blood fued

Law Enforcement = 

  • tithings = men over the age of 12 who would catch crinimals and enforce the law - around 10 men
  • Hue and cry = if a crime has occured someone can call the H + C to alert the community 
  • Trial by jury = a group of men from the community who knew the accused and accuser - decide who is telling the truth
  • Trial by ordeal = were torture mechanisms designed to test
