Dealing with problems

  • Town council passed by-laws to make people keep streets clean and stop dumping things in rivers
  • There were some successes in piping water into towns and cities
  • Some towns had public toilets (stopped people doing it on the streets)
  • Some towns had stewes (public baths) where people bathed together

Why wasn't more done?

  • The link between dirt and disease wasn't proven until 1861
  • People didn't worry about hygiene…
