Dealing with problems
- Town council passed by-laws to make people keep streets clean and stop dumping things in rivers
- There were some successes in piping water into towns and cities
- Some towns had public toilets (stopped people doing it on the streets)
- Some towns had stewes (public baths) where people bathed together
Why wasn't more done?
- The link between dirt and disease wasn't proven until 1861
- People didn't worry about hygiene…
