MEDIA: REPRESENTATIONS of YOUTH

Wayne et al conducted a content analysis of 2130 news items and they found that young people were mainly represented as a violent threat to society. They found that it was very rare for news items to feature a young person's perspective or opinion. They note that the media only delivers a one-dimensional picture of youth; one that encourages fear and condemnation rather than understanding. 

Women in Journalism showed that the best chance a teenagers had of receiving sympathetic coverage was if they died, meaning they would then be reffered to as 'star student', rather than "hoodies", "louts" or "scum". Out of a survey of nearly 1000 boys, 85% admitted that they felt demonised by the media - that it reflects them in a bad light.
