Mechatronics

Mechanical Devices

  • Types of motion

    • Linear - straight line

    • Rotary - around axis

    • Reciprocating - repeated up and down

    • Oscillating - curved swing

  • Levers

    • effort - the amount of force applied by the user, also referred to as the input

    • fulcrum - where the lever pivots

    • load - the weight that needs to be moved, also referred to as the output

    • Mechanical advantage = load(N) / effort (N)

    • Classes of Levers

      • First order- Effort, Fulcrum Load eg seesaw

      • Second order - effort, Load, Fulcrum eg wheelbarrows

      • Fulcrum, Effort, Load - eg tweezers

    • Cams and followers - cam attaches to a crankshaft which rotates. The follower touches the command follows the shape moving up and down

    • Gears - can change the direction or the speed of the movement.

      • Ratio = number of teeth of driven/ number of teeth on driver

    • Pulleys - use
