In 1950, Joseph McCarthy was a young Republican senator in search of a headline. He took advantage of the communist hysteria that was building in the USA

The methods he used:

  • He claimed, by using FBI loyalty board investigations, that he had a list of over 200 Communists in the state department
  • This brought lots of publicity. People suggested that this claim lacked foundation or any real evidence. McCarthy accused these people of being communist
  • McCarthy began to investigate communist activity in the government. McCarthy extended his
