In 1950, Joseph McCarthy was a young Republican senator in search of a headline. He took advantage of the communist hysteria that was building in the USA
The methods he used:
- He claimed, by using FBI loyalty board investigations, that he had a list of over 200 Communists in the state department
- This brought lots of publicity. People suggested that this claim lacked foundation or any real evidence. McCarthy accused these people of being communist
