Bismark: the master planner

Bismarck claimed just after the unification of Germany was complete that he had planned unity right from the beginning in just 5 stages:

1. Gain Russian neutrality:

  • Bismarck made the decision to meet with Tsar Alexander II
  • he offered military assistance
  • he also denied that the whole meeting ever happened

2. Trick Austria into declaring war:

  • he created tension in Holstein (which was given to Austria but was by Prussia)
  • he made plans to make ammendments to the German constitution which would clearly upset Austria
  • he also thought to create the Bad-Gastein agreement in August 1865
