Mass Tourism - Kenya

Context:-

     Kenya is in East Africa

     Attracts over 700,000 visitors per year

     Two different environments to attract foreign visitors:

        -  Wildlife parks of the plateau (Tsavo, Maasai Mara, Samburu, Amboseli)

        -  Indian Ocean coastline

     Surveys have shown that for up to 80% of visitors the main reason for choosing Kenya was the wildlife

     Protected its wildlife within 45 National Parks

     Provides luxorious accomodation in safari lodges

     When neighbouring countries were wracked by civil wars, Kenya remained comparatively prosperous

     2007 figures:

        -  Kenya's biggest foreign exchange earner, US £1 billion

        -  Tourist revenues accounted for 15% GDP

        -  Record high tourist numbers - 1.8 million

        -  Direct employment generated:250,000

        -  Indirect employment generated: 250,000

        -  Each full time worker supports 7-12 other people
