1.1 Foreign Policy 1553-1558
1553-1555:
· Charles V (HRE) was in the last part of the Hasburg-Valois (France) and by 1555 he abdicated; his son Philip had taken over in the west and his brother Ferdinand had taken over in the East of the Hasburg empire.
· Mary’s marriage to Philip led to tensions like the 1554 Wyatt Rebellion
· Mary acted as a mediator between France and the Hasburgs at Gravelines in Spring 1555
1556-1557:
· The truce between France and the Hasburgs at the Treaty of Vaucelles (February 1556) was ended in September 1556 when Phillip attacked Pope Paul IV who was allied with France.
· Philip demanded English support and returned to England in March to press his claim for funds, naval support and troops.
