MARXIST view on YOUTH CULTURE

Overview of Marxism = Society is based on conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proleitariat. Rather than seeing youth as homogeneous, unlike Fnctionalists, Marxists are interested in studying spectacular youth subcultures as they share similar characteristics - they are a form of resistance against Capitalism and they exaggerate working class values.

The Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) developed research into spectacular subcultures in the 1970's. Their definition for a spectacular youth subculture is subcultures based around flamboyant and highly visible styles with confrontational attitudes. Examples are punks, skinheads and teddy boys.

Hall and Jefferson (1976) claimed that young people cannot articulate their anger against Capitalism and therefore resist it through their dress and styles.
