Marxist  summary of crime

Marxists have 3 views on crime. The first one is that crime is Criminogenic, which means that crime is natural due to a capitalist society. Crime is a rational response to the competitiveness and inequality within society. Alienation and a lack of control of their lies may result in frustration and aggression which may lead to crimes such as violence and vandalism. Gordon argues that crime is characterised by class inequalities and the distribution in things such as wealth, income poverty and unemployment.

The second view is that the law reflects ruling class interests and ideologies. Althusser believes that the law is an Ideological state apparatus (institutions that create false class consciousness by indoctrinating the w/c with r/c views) which makes sure its normal to have some who are obscenely wealthy and obscenely poor. It enables the division of class inequalities.  Box argues serious crime is ideological
