Managing energy to ensure sustainability

HideShow resource information

The Management Challenge:

How to balance the ECONOMIC needs with the ENVIRONMENTAL needs and SOCIAL needs to achieve SUSTAINABILITY.

(Sustainability is the ability to carry the system on into the future without a reduction in the system or standard of living)

Management involves reducing or conserving inputs (fuel, water, raw materials) and reducing harmful outputs (pollution) but is also about ensuring the flows in the system are efficient (transporting energy).

NB, Sustainability is all about balancing supply and demand.

Supply:

  • Expand energy production-build new plants, discover new oilfields, etc.
  • New technology.
  • Diversify energy production-new sources (within the area or from other external suppliers) or use new fuels.
  • Increase renewables.
