‘Bad’ King John failed to live up to the Medieval king expectations - lead army, good relations with Church, keep peace, have support of barons. He had bad relations with the church, posed high taxes and scutage to fund unsuccessful wars, and increased general taxes.  

Magna Carta said:  

• Barons' heirs to inherit their land on £100 payment to the King. 
• No scutage without the agreement of barons advising King
