ACT 1 SCENE SUMMARIES & KEY QUOTES
ACT 1 SCENCE I
Thunder and lightning crash above a Scottish moor (pathetic fallacy)
Three witches appear out the storm
Witches were chanting and were making plans to meet up again on the heath to confront Macbeth (Stronger than Macbeth? )
KEY QUOTE: Fair is foul and foul is fair (ALL) (sense of foreboding and deception)
ACT 1 SCENCE II
King Duncan’s asks for news about the battle between the Scots and the Irish who were lead by Macdonwald
The captain says that Macbeth and Banquo fought with great courage and violence
It was then said that the Thane of Cawdor has been defeated.
Duncan says Thane of Cawdor should give his title to Macbeth
KEY QUOTE: For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name (CAPTAIN) – describing the eponymous hero
ACT 1 SCENCE III
Three witches appear on the heath where they had planned to confront Macbeth (pathetic fallacy)
Macbeth and Banquo come across the witches on their way to the king’s court and are shocked by the sight of the three old women (KEY QUOTE: So wither’d and wild in there attire)
The witches hail Macbeth has the thane of Glamis, thane of Cawdor and king here after.
Banquo demand the witches tell Macbeth his future – they said he will not be king but his offspring will
Witches vanish and King Duncan’s messengers appear to report that Macbeth is now Thane of Cawdor

ACT 1 SCENCE IV
King Duncan asks his son to confirm that the Thane of Cawdor has been killed
He is told that he dies with dignity
Duncan thanks Macbeth and Banquo…
