The Ludendorff Spring Offensive, Spring 1918

Causes :

  • April 1917: The USA had declared war on Germany. This was due to:

    • Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare

    • Zimmermann’s telegram,  a secret diplomatic communication issued in January 1917 that proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico

    • American troops would be transported across the Atlantic Ocean and trained to fight on the Western Front. The German Kaiser and German High Command knew this would take time, and needed to win before Allied fighting forces were strengthened.

  • Revolution in Russia from February to October 1917 had taken them out of the war. Germany had 500,000 more men they could use on the Western Front

  • Germany had pressure on the homefront due to the British Naval Blockade, NO FOOD

  • THIS LED TO General Ludendorff launching the offensive against allied forces on the 21st March 1918
