The personal Monarchy:

The strengths and weaknesses of the royal government:

  • Strengths outweighed the weaknesses suring the middle portion of Louis' reign
  • Authority after 1685 was sometimes constrained and sometimes very confident
  • Louis achieved the illusion of unrestricted political power, but this was much harder to sustain after 1685 (especially in the provinces)
  • Louis prided himself on his manipulation of his concilliar govt. and his minsters e.g. Louvois
  • 1685-91 Louis' personal rule waned
  • 1687, Louis got an anal fistula which meant that he was less capable of exerting authority so Louvois dominated royal decision making on his behalf
