The personal Monarchy:
The strengths and weaknesses of the royal government:
- Strengths outweighed the weaknesses suring the middle portion of Louis' reign
- Authority after 1685 was sometimes constrained and sometimes very confident
- Louis achieved the illusion of unrestricted political power, but this was much harder to sustain after 1685 (especially in the provinces)
- Louis prided himself on his manipulation of his concilliar govt. and his minsters e.g. Louvois
- 1685-91 Louis' personal rule waned
- 1687, Louis got an anal fistula which meant that he was less capable of exerting authority so Louvois dominated royal decision making on his behalf
