“I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men, they are far superior and always have been.”

 “Sucks to your ***-mar!”

“We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.”  golding being sarcastic as they really werent the did terrible things in the war

“The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.”

“the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.”

piggy quotes

“Which is better -- to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is? Which is better -- to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?”

Because of the extreme irony of the scene it's in; Immediately after he says that Roger hurls a rock at his head because Jack's tribe sees him as just being a nuisance. Piggy was the smartest one there and they all screwed him over.

"Life is scientific...I know there isn't no beast, but I know there isn't no fear either. Unless we get frightened of people."

"We can do all right on our own...It's them that haven't no common sense that make trouble on this island."

"'I don't care what you call me so long as it's not what they used to call me in school...They used to call me Piggy!"

  • He is very intelligent - in Chapter 1 it is his idea to make a list of names, and it is he who realises that no adult knows the boys are on the island. Later he suggests making a sundial and hats. "What intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy."
  • Ralph recognises Piggy could think: "Piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains."
  • However, he does not speak as grammatically accurately as the others:" How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper". Perhaps this is to suggest he wasn't as well educated as the others and that he is not from the right cl*** of people to be a successful leader. At the time the novel was written most power was still in the hands of the middle and upper cl***es. "Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ***-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination to manual labour."
  • He is embarr***ed by his nickname, and he behaves with dignity when Ralph betrays the name to the others.. compare to how jack reacts when he is laughed at .We never know his real name.
  • He is kind and considerate to the littluns. He helps the boy with the
