Locke and Consent

  • Any man that has any possession, enjoyment or part in government gives their tacit consent
  • Residing in territories = give consent to even bad government
  • We consent when we agree to political authority
  • From a state of nature, consent is what joins and creates these societies
  • Can only become a full member of society by express consent
  • Problem is, few actually consent to their governments or the government is not actually legitimate
  • Most obvious solution is tacit consent
  • Locke believed if you actually lived somewhere and participate you are obliged to obey government and tacitly consent to it
