Localisation of cortical function
Localisation - specific areas of the brain have particular psychical and psychological functions
Lateralisation - the dominance of one hemisphere of the brain for particular psychical and psychological functions
Study: Phineas Gage
Aim: to explain the change in his personality
Method: whilst working Phineas Gage was preparing to blast a section of rocks using explosives to create a new railway line. Gage accidentally dropped a tamping iron which caused the explosive to ignite. The explosion hurled a metre length pole through gages head
Results: Gage survived - his personality had changed and he was now grumpy and rude
Conclusion: it taught us a great deal about the complexity…
