In September 1957, 9 black students were allowed in the school Little Rock
The situation got so out of hand that President Eisenhower was finally forsed to act in favour of segregation.
On their first day, the 9 students were unable to enter the school because the state guardsmen blocked their entry.
The governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, had sent troops to prevent the black students from enrolling.
Faced with court action, Faubus withdrew the state guard.
This left the 9 black students at the mercy of the racist mob.
