Limits to the King's power

  • Funds could only be raised through royal prerogative (e.g. customs duties) or subsidies
  • If the King had financial problems, the power of Parliament increased as the King had to call Parliament to gain subsidies
  • Parliament could protest against the King's plans by refusing to grant subsidies
  • Parliament was reluctant to grant the King greater financial independence
