Risk is a measure of probability that damage to health will occur as a result of a given hazard. The concept of risk has two elements:

  • The probability that a hazardous event will occur.
  • The consequences of that hazardous event.

Risk is measured by comparing the likelihood of harm occurring in those exposed to a hazard to those who aren't exposed to it (generally the control group). Risk can be measured as a value that ranges from 0% (no harm will occur) to 100% (harm will certainly occur). Health risks need a time-line so a patient can be told how long they…
