LEUKAEMIA: a cancer of blood or bone marrow.
ACUTE LEUKAEMIA: happens when most of the abnormal blood cells stay immature and can't carry out normal functions. it can get bad very fast.
CHRONIC LEUKAEMIA: happens when there are some immature cells, but others are normal and can function normally. that means it gets bad, but more slowly.
CAUSE:
- unknown
- people who have it have certain abnormal chromosomes but the chromosomes don't cause the leukaemia
SYMPTOMS:
- fever or chills
- persistent fatigue, weakness
- frequent or severe infections
- losing weight without trying
- swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen
- easy bleeding or bruising
- recurrent nosebleeds
- tiny red spots on your skin (petechiae)
- excessive sweating, esp at night
- bone pain or tenderness
P.I.E.S.F
PHYSICAL:
- pain in joints or bones
- fever and night sweats
- feeling weak or tired
- bleed easily
- weight loss
(DURING TREATMENT)
- heart damage
- thyroid problems
- lung damage
- secondary cancers
INTELLECTUAL:
- none, however, children may miss school- affect their learning/knowledge
