LEUKAEMIA

LEUKAEMIA: a cancer of blood or bone marrow.

ACUTE LEUKAEMIA: happens when most of the abnormal blood cells stay immature and can't carry out normal functions. it can get bad very fast.

CHRONIC LEUKAEMIA: happens when there are some immature cells, but others are normal and can function normally. that means it gets bad, but more slowly.

CAUSE:

  • unknown
  • people who have it have certain abnormal chromosomes but the chromosomes don't cause the leukaemia

SYMPTOMS:

  • fever or chills
  • persistent fatigue, weakness
  • frequent or severe infections
  • losing weight without trying 
  • swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen
  • easy bleeding or bruising
  • recurrent nosebleeds
  • tiny red spots on your skin (petechiae)
  • excessive sweating, esp at night
  • bone pain or tenderness

P.I.E.S.F

PHYSICAL:

  • pain in joints or bones                             
  • fever and night sweats
  • feeling weak or tired
  • bleed easily
  • weight loss

(DURING TREATMENT)

  • heart damage
  • thyroid problems
  • lung damage
  • secondary cancers

INTELLECTUAL:

  • none, however, children may miss school- affect their learning/knowledge
  • family- needs to learn about the condition…
