Social Learning -

  • Also known as observational learning
  • Involves observing and copying the actions of others, role models for example
  • All behaviour is learned from the environment
  • The personality is not genetically programmed
  • The role model (or significant other) is more likely to be copied if they are the same gender as the learner
  • They are also more likely to be copied if they are powerful and authotitive
  • Can occur if someone joins a new group and adopts the norms of the group
  • Role models may cause young performers to develop an interest in sport
