Breaking the chain of causation

- This is where the prosecution proves the chain of causation between D's conduct and the prohibited consequence:

         - D may claim that the chain has been broken by one of the following:

                      - a naturally occuring event

                      - act of a third party

                      - V's own conduct

1. Naturally Occuring event

the chain of causation will be broken where an unforseeable natural event occurs between D's conduct and the prohibited consequence.

2. Act of a third party

- the chain of causation will be broken if a third party intervenes between D's conduct and the prohibited consequence.

-e.g: D trips V; V breaks leg- goes to hospital; a bomb goes off…
