Timeline of the European Union

1951 Treaty of Paris: estabolished a coal and steel trading community between France, Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. 

1957 Treaty of Rome: created a common market for trade between European Community members. 

1972 European Communities Act: after twice being rejected previously, the UK were finally allowed to join the European Market. 

1979 European Parliamentary estabolioshed: for the first time, an elected body were able to be elected and make laws that offer all countries in the EU.

1991: The Uk challenged the authority of the EU Parliament in a landmark case called Factortame 1991. It was decided that Parliament Soverignty was limited by the EU Parliament. 

1992 Treaty of Maastricht: changed the name of the European Community to the European Union. It gave the EU more powers over countries in the EU.

2009 Treaty of Lisbon: gave further powers to the EU Parliament over EU countries. The UK did not like this. 

2016: EU referendum in the UK. UK voted to leave the European Union. 

2020: UK leave the European Unions jurisdiction, 

2021: UK to leave the common market? But will continue to trade with the EU?
