1960s and 1970s
The 1960’s holidays abroad became very popular, and Fred Pontins snatched at it. He started “Pontinental Holidays,” offering 2 week packaged holidays to Sardinia and Ibiza. Packaged holidays included flight, accommodation, food and entertainment. By the 1970s, the Mediterranean coast area had been taken over by mass tourism. In the 70s, Freddie Laker launched Skytrain in Laker Airways, which offered trips to New York. However in 1982, Laker Airways went bankrupt. But the company laid the foundation for other low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair and Easyjet.
