Later Middle Ages

Types of Punishment:

  • Wergild -ABOLISHED
  • Mutilations- Same as Anglo Saxons - declined as the Church didn't like it
  • Executions -only for serious crimes, but they were now public - made king look more powerful
  • Outlaws - Same as Anglo Saxons
  • The Stocks - a way of humiliating petty criminals 
  • Fines - Mainly used for petty crimes
  • Prisons - only used for holding the accused before a trial

Religion doesn't play  a major part in everyday punishment
