The Last Years of the Conservatives in Power; 1963-64.

 

These last years were marred by scandal;

  • The Vassall Affair; a civil servant in the Admiralty has caught spying for the Soviet Union.
  • Kim Philby; A senior official in the Foreign Office had for decades been passing information to the Soviet Union, recruiting agents and running a spy network. He fled to Moscow. (It came out also that there were three other key spies, all members of the Foreign Office and Secret Service).
