When you're obese, more food energy is taken in than used, so it's stored as fat. Vitamins and minerals are needed for healthy functioning of the body. A shortage may lead to a deficiency disease. Metabolism is converting food into glucose. Basic metabolic rate is the rate of chemical reactions in your cells. Three things that affect metabolic rate are your ratio of fat to muscle; the amount of exercise you do and your genes. BMI = mass in kg / height in metres squared.
