Joseph Lister had seen Carbolic Acid being used to treat foul smells in the sewer works. He realised it's potential and so decided to use it in operating theatres in the early 1860's. When he used his carbolic spray he discovered that the infection rates of the hospital were reduced. In 1865, Lister heard about Louis Pasteur's
