How does Stephen Spielberg create suspense in the film “Jaws”?

‘Jaws’ is a blockbuster. It has everything you need in a film; suspense, action, drama. The movie is a phenomenon. It could be viewed all over the world because it was about something that everybody could be afraid of. Sharks. The director of this film is Steven Spielberg.

The film is about a Great White that attacks towns people on a small island where they live. The town is called Amity, and it is getting ready for a parade on the beach for the 4th July weekend.

In the film, they didn’t choose big, well known actors to be in the film, because they didn’t need them. The shark was the main character, and the film was good enough to be done without big stars, and with the storyline and the way it was advertised, it made you want to see the film even without famous people in it. That was what the Spielberg wanted.

The idea of the film was taken from a book written by Peter Benchley. They wanted the film to be original, and realistic. Spielberg removed the romance from the film because he wanted full action throughout as an adventure movie.

The suspense in the film was great, because when nothing was going to happen, it made you think it would, and it made the film very gripping. That’s how Spielberg made it really popular because everyone wanted the thrill of the film. In this essay I am going to review the film at different key scenes, to show how they were created, and how they made “Jaws” the biggest film of summer 1975 and the first blockbuster.

The opening scene takes place on the beach, and it is the first attack. The music used in this is very calming. It has an open fire out on the sands, where people are gathered having fun and talking. A girl meets a boy, and they decide to go swimming. As they run towards the water, you can still hear the laughing and the sound of a harmonica being played on the beach, but
