Italy and the Great War.
Italy joined WW1 on 23rd May, 1915 when the country delared war on Austria-Hungary. This was surprising as Italy had previously been alliances with Germany, Austria and Hungary. However Italy only sided with Britain and France because they offered a better deal if they won the war.
Italy, if she fought for Britain and France, was promised:
- South Tyrol (a German speaking area just south of the Alpine Crest)
- Trentino (an Italian speaking area south of Tyrol)
- Area covering the eastern side of the Adriatic sea, including Gorizia, Gradisea, Trieste, Istria, bits of Dalmata and…
