Email host - an internet provider that offers an email service to its users. e.g BT 

Protocols used to govern and control data transmission for common tasks:

Protocols are important in order for IT systems to communicate. A protocol is a set of rules governing how the communication takes place. Protocols may vary from each business. Protocols will dictate how the transmission is initiated, how data us encoded and how it is terminated.

Email:

  • Post office protocol (POP3) - Used to retrieve mail from a server by a mail client such as Mozilla's Thunderbird or Microsoft's Outlook.
  • Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) - Used to transmit mail to a server either from a mail client or another server. 
  • Internet message access protocol (IMAP) - Used to access mail on a remote server by a mail client. The difference between POP3 and IMAP is that IMPA does not remove mail from the server but merely acts as a method of accessing the mail.
  • Exchange - This is a proprietary protocol used by Microsoft with their Microsoft Exchange Server and Outlook, it works similar to IMAP.

There are various ways in which people can communicate over the internet through VOIP. For example, voice-over-the-internet applications include Skype, FaceTime and Google Hangouts.
