Isomerism

?

Isomerism

isomers have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula

there are many types of isomers

  • for example chain isomers ( butane and 2 methyl propane)
  • positional isomers - the position of the functional group has been changed
  • functional group isomers - isomers which have different functional groups

stereoisomerism - is where the molecules have the same molecular formula and the same bonds but a different 3D orientation in space

there are two types of this type of isomerism

Geometric isomerism

this is your E/Z and Cis /Trans isomerism for this to work the molecule must have a double bond which restricts the rotation of the molecule and two different groups attached to the carbons forming…
