Isomerism
isomers have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula
there are many types of isomers
- for example chain isomers ( butane and 2 methyl propane)
- positional isomers - the position of the functional group has been changed
- functional group isomers - isomers which have different functional groups
stereoisomerism - is where the molecules have the same molecular formula and the same bonds but a different 3D orientation in space
there are two types of this type of isomerism
Geometric isomerism
