Ireland - The Age of Nations

  • 1903 - Abbey Theatre founded by William Butler Yates
  • Influenced by fear of Ireland becoming British
  • Patrick Pearce joined the IRB
  • 1912 - Home Rule put forward
  • Ulster volunteer force in 1913 challenged the state
  • Irish volunteers and citizen army to protect the Home Rule
  • 24th and 25th April 1914 ammunition brought and distributed across Ulster by Germany
  • Following July Nationalists did trhe same and were caught out
  • 30,000 Irishmen died in World War 1
  • Fear of conscription in Ireland from Britain
  • Easter Rising in 1916
  • Rebels lead by Pearce and Connolly - took over GPO
  • Proclamation read outside - announcing an Irish Republic (only around 20 were there to listen)
  • British outnumbered the rebels 10-1
  • The Fusiliers joined the fight
  • Surrendered on April 29th 
  • Leaders taken to Kilmainham jail and sentenced to death
  • Turned every one of them into martyrs because they died for the cause and this was a mistake made by the British
  • British declared Marshall Law
  • The volunteers eventually turned into the IRA (Irish Republican Army)
